VOLUNTEER PROJECT! SEE BELOW.
The genesis of Open Sky was a generous donation from our friend Ivar Shuholm. Ivar practiced with our prayer group for many years before becoming a Buddhist monk under Thich Nhat Hanh in 1995. His renunciation of property before departing planted a seed which became Open Sky Hermitage. Located 30 miles east of Bend, in the high desert of central Oregon, it offers a rare opportunity to be still in the majesty of creation, to let the concerns of daily life settle and to open up to the inner wisdom and voice of Love.
With your help there is now one hermitage and some ancillary structures, but we need more hermitage space and other basic facilities so that others can spend time at Open Sky Hermitage. This place has the potential to be a vital resource but we need your help.
We are excited about our friend and architect’s concept for a few basic 8′ x 16′ guest hermitage including an 8′ deck. Each would be oriented using passive solar principles and materials, with a wood-stove or propane heater for extra warmth. The estimated cost for each is about $9000 for materials and $9000 for labor.
This could be a treasure for Bend and a welcome refuge of quiet and retreat for many…WITH YOUR HELP.
VOLUNTEER KINDNESS! Some very special supporters have volunteered to bring down a work crew early this fall and put up a bathroom-shower-commonroom structure–AND donate much of the necessary funding!
We would love your help in supporting this project or contributing toward the next phase: a sanctuary. These structures would enrich the retreat experience, add comfort and allow for “solitude in community”. Peace and gratitude to all!
